FAQ's
How can I check expiry date on canned tuna?
Sirena canned tuna doesn’t display a best before date, as it has a long shelf life when stored correctly. According to Australian and New Zealand Food Standards*, products with a shelf life over two years aren’t required to show one.
As long as the can is undamaged and stored in a cool, dry place, the tuna should remain safe to eat. Once opened, if it looks or smells off, please discard it.
Is Sirena tuna sustainable?
At Sirena, sustainability is central to everything we do. Since 2010, we’ve publicly committed to sourcing 100% of our tuna using pole and line fishing—a method widely recognised as the most sustainable for commercial tuna harvesting. This approach ensures each fish is caught individually, helping to reduce by-catch, protect vulnerable marine species, reduce plastic waste and support coastal communities through local employment and the preservation of traditional fishing practices.
We source our Yellowfin tuna only from certified pole and line fisheries, where fishing zones are specifically protected for this method. Across our supply chain, we work closely with partners to uphold responsible sourcing and maintain high operational standards.
Sirena is also a proud member of the International Pole & Line Foundation (IPNLF), which promotes one-by-one fishing methods and collaborates across science, policy, and supply chains to support responsible fisheries. We support IPNLF’s efforts to improve data transparency and uphold catch limits that protect tuna stocks and empower small-scale fisheries. For more information please go to Home – IPNLF
In terms of research, our team participates in ongoing sustainability reviews and audits, including involvement in SEDEX and SMETA frameworks to help ensure ethical sourcing and environmental responsibility.

Does Sirena tuna contain mercury?
Nearly all fish contain some amount of mercury, a naturally occurring substance that accumulates in fish over time. However, the levels vary significantly, with large, predatory, and long-lived fish having much higher concentrations than smaller, younger, and less predatory fish.
At Sirena, we use Yellowfin Tuna (Thunnus Albacares) in our canned tuna products, which is caught using the most sustainable method – Pole and Line fishing. This method is not only environmentally responsible but also highly selective, which allows for the catch of smaller Yellowfin tuna near the surface of the water.
Because we use smaller and younger tuna, the levels of mercury in our products are naturally lower. This is supported by Food Standards Australia New Zealand (FSANZ), which states:
“Canned tuna generally has lower levels of mercury than tuna fillets because smaller tuna species are used, and the tuna are generally younger when caught. Canned tuna and a variety of other types of non-canned tuna can be consumed according to the recommendations in the Australian Dietary Guidelines.”
You can find more details in the FSANZ brochure here:
Mercury in Fish – FSANZ
In addition, our products are regularly tested as part of our quality assurance process, and mercury levels consistently fall well below the maximum limit set by FSANZ (0.5 mg/kg for canned tuna).
We take the safety and quality of our products very seriously and are committed to providing consumers with safe, high-quality tuna that they can trust.
